A bohemian chic surf girl clothing brand, made in England.
You do not hit a target you don’t aim for. When you make a goal it should be challenging and meaningful but don’t let it overwhelm you with anxiety, if it is too far off, adjust it, bring it closer, but don’t have it so close you don’t get stretched.
When I was younger I wanted to have my own clothing brand, it was a very clear and ambitious dream for a 7-year-old. It was also amongst many other dreams I had…
My mother is an amazing woman, she raised 5 children by herself in a country where you do not get any financial government help. (South Africa) One of mom’s many skills for bringing in money to the family was designing and sewing clothing. She used to make the most gorgeous children’s beach clothing and sell at markets. Between working a full-time job, and bringing up 4 very energetic boys, as well as a sickly girl ( me) who was in and out of the hospital with chronic asthma. I do not know where she got the time or energy to do it, she was also chronically sick for years but worked continually for her children. She was a skilled seamstress….

…and fast forward 20 years, mum and I decided to start developing some clothing ideas together. I started to wear the clothing around town, and too my surprise I would get stopped and asked where I got my dress from, or my skirt from. It was clear to me that there is a niche market for girls who like bohemian surf wear just like me
Mom and I went through some names and settled on a brand name SEA BLUE. A year passed and nothing much more happened, other than realising SEABLUE was taken, when we wanted to register it. My confidence was low, and being a freelance photographer, videographer was hard work. It was a daily battle through thick hard emotions and trying to make some progress in my video and photography work. Keeping my eyes on a goal that would take a lot of focus was just not going to happen.
I had to get some clear focus and set some dates to launch our clothing brand. 2 years after the initial designs I set a date and got to work on my strategy.
Now working pretty much full time creating corporate video and photography, my to-do list for our newly named JBAY clothing was longer than I could bear. It required me to build the WordPress website with little knowledge, do branding, marketing, sort productions lines etc. I was stressed out.
I shared my struggles with my brother Daniel who after some thought offered to come on board JBAY CLOTHING and help with the business end of things as well as get the website ready. It was a massive relief which meant that I could focus on what I love. Creating the brand, marketing materials and designs. So if you wonder why I have been M. I. A on here, it is because I was focusing on my target to get JBAY CLOTHING launched.
Check out our soft launch website.
There are now new targets in place, which include a surf film! So keep your eyes peeled!
